Frequently Asked Questions

What is the Taiko Census?

The Census is a comprehensive collection of data from all taiko players. It is a follow-up to the 2013 TCA Taiko Census, which helped launch and define the mission of the Taiko Community Alliance. We are collecting this data to measure the art form of taiko and to identify taiko community needs. We aim to capture a comprehensive snapshot of the taiko community in 2016 to help the TCA community and funders understand the demographic make-up of taiko. Our supplemental questions will ask you about your motivations, actions, and spending behavior so that we can better shape our programming.

How long will it take?

The census has two parts. Part 1 asks for basic demographic information and your taiko profile (your taiko groups and dates of affiliation) and will take between 5-10 minutes to complete, depending on how many taiko groups you have. Part 2 contains supplemental questions about your motivations, actions and spending behavior. It will take approximately 10-15 minutes to complete. Instructors and workshop leaders have additional questions that will take an extra 5 minutes or so.

Can I participate in the census if I'm not currently playing with a group?

Yes, absolutely. We welcome and encourage anyone who has ever played taiko to fill out the taiko census. This will help make our network map a lot more informative. In the Taiko Profile section, make sure that the "currently participating" box is unchecked, and an end date is specified for all groups. In the Taiko Supplement section, feel free to leave any non applicable question blank.

Can I edit my census response after I submit?

Yes you can! The census tool will send you an email with a link to edit your response if you navigate away from the page or submit. There are different links for the Taiko Profile and the Taiko Supplement. Check your spam and other organizational tabs.

Why is the taiko profile not anonymous?

The taiko profile "maps" you to other individuals in the taiko network, and it's really cool to see who else is in your individual taiko network based on the groups you’ve played with and the individuals in those groups. We utilize first and last names as well as group names and durations to arrange the mapping and it works best when the individuals can be identified.

If I participated in Taiko Mapping or took the previous census, does the census remember my name and information?

Yes. As long as you use the same email address. If you have changed email addresses since the last census, you will have to access your previous email address, or start a new taiko profile.

Which email should I use to fill out the census?

The email that you want TCA to use in order to communicate with you.

I'm sharing an email address with someone else. Can we both fill out the census with the same email address?

No. Emails are being used to identify individuals. Census participants will need to their own individual emails to submit responses.

Will the census be translated into other languages?

No, not right now. We don't yet have the resources for localization into other languages, but could potentially do it in the future for other surveys. If you'd like to support the development of TCA's activities in other languages, please contact
